The English people thought of Drake as a hero, but
to the Spanish he was a criminal. Suggest reasons
why these two people had such conflicting views of
Drake.
View Figure 6-2 on page 130 and discuss the
questions posed.
What details suggest that this is a celebration
honouring Columbus? Why might Deveria have
shown Isabella in a beautiful golden dress?
The artist shows Columbus being honoured by the
queen and king. Everyone is watching in
admiration. The artist uses the splendour of the
setting and the opulence of the clothing to show
that Columbus’s exploits are worthy of honour by
the king and queen and their court.

question 1
Queen Elizabeth:
Drake is a faithful servant of
the crown who has brought
us great wealth.
He deserves to be rewarded.
Sir Francis Drake:
I risked my life against the
thieving Spanish to bring
glory to England.
I deserve to be richly
rewarded.
King Phillip II:
Drake is a common pirate
who stole the wealth that
was rightfully ours.
He is a criminal who
deserves to be hanged.

Why do you think Spain and
Portugal went to the Pope to
solve their problems?
They both respected the
pope’s wisdom and
judgment, and they believed
he would be an
impartial arbitrator.
What reasons do you think
Spain, Portugal and the Pope
might have had for keeping
the treaty secret?
Spain and Portugal might not
have wanted other countries
to see that they could not
reach an agreement. The
pope would not want other
countries to start coming to
him to resolve their disputes.

Discuss the bulleted points
#1 The details include the following phrases: “became
wonderfully attached to us,” “the people are ingenious, and
would be good servants,” “they appear to have no religion,”
“require…to be placed under the authority of civilized and
virtuous princes or nations, so that they learn, from the might,
wisdom, and law of their conquerors, to practise better morals,
worthier customs, and a more civilized way of life.”
#2 People who have what is considered to be a modern
worldview do not accept that one group of people can be
considered superior to another group. They believe that all
people are equal and it is wrong to ridicule or criticize another
group of people because of their race, religion, or heritage.
#3 That the Indigenous peoples would benefit from colonization
in many ways. That Europeans considered themselves to be
superior to Indigenous peoples and that their superiority gave
them the right to colonize the Indigenous peoples’ lands. That it
would be easy to colonize these new lands because the people
were unsophisticated and childlike yet quick to learn.
Figure 6-6. How might de Bry’s religious
point of view affect his portrayal of the
people conquered by the Spanish Catholics?
De Bry, a Protestant, portrayed the Catholics
unflatteringly as brutal slave-masters.
