• Assessing the current program (what are the goals and
objectives and how have they been met).
• Seeking input and support for change (principal, advisory
committee, counselors, students, parents etc).
• Performing a “needs” assessment (use surveys to find
out what the students, teachers a parents need from a
program).
• Determining resources (business support, materials,
colleagues, community services etc).

• Setting goals (learning and service related).
• Assigning responsibilities (who is responsible for
providing services and keeping on track with goals?).
• Marketing the program (brochures, presentations, online, meetings).

Scheduling and Setting Priorities
• Time management is essential to meet program goals.
• Counseling services should be aimed at student needs
addressing developmental, social and career issues.
• Determine what issues are critical, give students
information about the groups to ensure attendance, and
seek input from teachers regarding group scheduling
times.
• Involve parents.

avoid conflicts.

different student activities.
• Counselors must have skills in: scheduling, clear
communication, setting timelines, delegating, doing followup, and time management.
• Coordination is a must if school programs are going to
work successfully.

Appraising
• School counselors gather information using interviews,
tests, inventories and checking school records.
• School counselors then make a diagnoses.
• Then they choose the appropriate service required for
the student issue.

Evaluating
• Accurate evaluation is needed to ensure the value of
counselor services.
• Evaluation includes the ongoing collection of data from
those receiving services.
• It also means gathering data on the effectiveness of the
counseling program in the school in general.
• Through this process, school counselors can choose the
most effective services to meet the needs of their
population.
