1.4 Characteristics of Good Sentences
• (1) Unity--one single, complete thought.
• E.g. Born in a small town in South China in
the early 50s, he grew up to be a famous
musician.
• (2) Coherence--clear connection between
parts; no faulty parallel constructions, no
unknown pronouns, no unclear relationships
• E.g. Upon entering the classroom,the
students stood up and said,“Good
morning!’’
• (3) Conciseness--No unnecessary words.
• E.g. He returned in the early part of the
month of August.
• (4) Emphasis--Important ideas are stressed
using word choice, repetition of words, and
punctuation such as an exclamation point(!)
• When the bank robbers entered the bank
they said,“Don’t move.”
• Government of the people,by the people,
for the people shall not perish from the
earth.(Abraham Lincoln)
• (5)Variety一A combination of simple and
complex sentences, short and long
sentences.
Here is Fred. Fred is a dog.He Call
jump.He likes to jump over fences.
• (6) Good Grammar--Good structure,good
use of articles (a, an, the), accurate spelling,
and clear punctuation.(Remember sentences
begin with a capital letter and end with a
period, question mark or exclamation
point.Sentences never end with a comma.)
1.5 Characteristics of Good
Paragraphs
• (1)Unity--A central theme;one topic sentence
(main idea), which can be an actual sentence
anywhere in the paragraph, or an implied thought,
and all sentences within the paragraph relate to
the topic sentence.
• (2) Coherence —Proper order;each sentence
leads smoothly and logically to the next
sentence.Paragraphs need to be planned.
• (3)Development--The paragraph should have
sufficient information to support the topic
sentence.
• The television western of several years ago differs
greatly from the western of today.Twenty years
ago,for example, the swindler or bank robber in a
western could be identified not by the crimes he
committed so much as by the color of the clothing
he wore---which was black.Today,the television
western reveals the villain by mannerisms and
personality.
•
(4)Good Grammar---The paragraph should have
proper punctuation, accurate spelling, etc.
•
• (5)Good Transition--Use of transition words that
move the reader between thoughts and paragraphs.
These words and phrases also help to clarify
meaning.
