Biology B
Chapter 1
Science- an organized system used to gather evidence to learn
about the natural world that surrounds us.
Observation- usually the first step in discovery
- mostly sight and sound, but may include touch,
smell, and taste
Data- the information that is carefully collected and recorded
a) Quantitative- numbers and measurements
b) Qualitative- descriptions and characteristics
Inference- a logical “guess” made by using all the data present
1-1 cont.
Hypothesis- an “educated” guess
- a scientific explanation for a set of observations
- may arise from: a) prior knowledge
b) logical inference
c) informed imagination
d) creative imagination
- Scientific hypotheses must be proposed in a way that
enables them to be tested.
- Never alter your data to support your hypothesis
Testing a Hypothesis
Experiment, Experiment, Experiment, and Experiment again!!!!!
- you can never test too many times
Controlled Experiment- an experiment in which one variable is
changed at a time.
- all other aspects of the experiment
should remain unchanged.
Manipulated- the variable that is changed
Responding Variable- the variable that is being observed and
recorded.
Scientific Investigation
Theory
Theory- after many test of a hypothesis, that result in
data that supports the “educated guess”, it
becomes a theory.
- a theory is NOT a law
- a theory can still be proven wrong
- as more information is available, a theory
may be revised or replaced with a new
explanation
*Important Information for All Experiments*
When beginning any experiment, You need to complete the following
3 sentences.
Title: The effect of the Independent Variable
on the Dependent Variable.
Question: How does the Independent Variable
affect the Dependent Variable.
Hypothesis: If the Independent Variable is Describe
Change, then the Dependent Variable
will Predict Results .
