September 2004 Strategic
Plan Direction
• Serve as a catalyst and collaborate with
public and private entities toward
environmentally responsible water supply
solutions;
• Prepare EIR on near-term aquifer storage
and recovery (ASR) project;
• Clarify ASR project and relationship with
California American Water (Cal-Am).

MPWMD ASR Project
• Multi-year effort since 1996 to evaluate ASR
feasibility.
• Successful pilot and full-scale test wells;
contributed to emergency Cal-Am supply.
• Series of temporary water rights permits to date;
need EIR to enable SWRCB long-term water
rights permit to carry out ASR program.
• ASR geared toward efficient use of current
resources; help reduce impacts on Carmel River
and Seaside Basin; not a “new” water supply.
