Computer Hardware - Software - what
do these words have in common?
Hardware

Both words have the suffix “ware”, which means something that’s a
useful tool. We use similar words to describe similar things, and
then make words distinctive by adding a word to show what’s
different. Why does one word use the prefix “hard” and the other
use the prefix “soft”? Sometimes we have to even invent new words
for things that didn’t previously exist!
In our study of Ancient Civilizations, we start
with the names of the First Three Stone Ages.

Notice that they all have the last root word “lithic” in common.
What does lithic mean? Have you ever heard of a lithium battery?
Have you ever heard of a
monolith? It comes from the
Greek word mono, which
means single, and lithos,
meaning stone. Click to see
Hammurabi’s monolith from
1700 BC.
