Apuntes de la clase viernes el 6 de septiembre Los cognados • Cognates are words from two languages that sound similar, are spelled similar, and have the same meaning. • As English borrows many words from Latin there are many Spanish-English cognates. Unos Patrones (en general): **NOT ALWAYS TRUE** 1.) Many English words that end in -ous change to -oso in Spanish ejemplo = delicious --> delicioso 2.) Many English words that end in -al are usually the same in Spanish ejemplo = hospital --> hospital tropical --> tropical 3.) Many English words that end in -ble are usually the same in Spanish ejemplo = terrible --> terrible 4.) Many English words that end in -ary change to -ario in Spanish ejemplo = vocabulary --> vocabulario primary --> primario REMEMBER - these patterns are not always true Beware of false cognates. There are many Spanish words that sound like English words that do not have the same meaning. You and your partner need to decide what description on the worksheet matches the card you have. Write cognate from the card on the line next to the description. When Señora tells you to “PASEN” you must immediately pass your card to another group. • You will continue to pass and receive cards until you have seen all the cards. ¿¿Hay más tiempo… ??
