So What Does This Have To Do With the Ontology?
• The model is the prime asset of the ontology.
• Generate / round-trip
• DDL
• XSD / XSLT
• Java etc. (not COBOL  )
• Add methods to classes
• Use a UML stereotype
• Put human-readable metadata in the model and/or link to a
metadata repository
Populating the Ontology
• Every adaptation is an opportunity
• Capture the adaptation requirements in a form that
contributes to the ontology
• This is part of your integration governance process
...and that’s when the real fun begins
• Version 1 is easy
• Version 2 is make-or-break
• Your (IT’s internal) customers own your information – and
that’s the good news
• You have to teach them about compatible change
• Use card games, or finger puppets, or whatever you have to
• Your vendors also “own” some of your information
• It can be a little bit harder to teach them...
