International business? • … and all those other opportunities with foreign countries, organisations and businesses! A final thought about this: What most companies are looking for… “A working knowledge of a language” -this is roughly the equivalent of a good GCSE that’s kept ‘topped-up’. Being able to tackle something in another language will only ever be an avantage. MY BRAIN AND ME… What learning languages does for me …which helps with general study skills in all subjects …and slows brain deterioration …improves your literacy and communication in your own language …helps your brain grow!!! …improves listening skills and awareness …language learning has a direct link to a better memory! Double the vocabulary building Twice the improvement in memory! Twice the improvement in literacy! Twice as many companies doubly interested in employing you!!! Twice the improvement in awareness! Double the benefit to study skills …to start with yes – but not for long! Once you become confident in a second language, the 3rd and 4th become easier to learn! It’s scientific fact! …you develop the same study, memory and learning skills in each language. …so it’s another buy one get one free! … twice the languages means twice the opportunities: Exchanges, trips, experience days and everything else! …you also learn what to include to make a really impressive piece of writing in all languages. An example from someone in this room… … your negative ‘mind’s eye’ will be drawn to focus on the mistakes – language crossover is possible early on (but this stops quickly promise!) An example from someone in this room… … but when we consider the quality of the range of language and transferable ideas – there’s a lot more to be really impressed by! • The majority of dual linguists are very successful in their GCSE languages. • …as a result, they usually take at least one language at A Level (all but one that I’ve taught in the last 5 years). • This sets them apart when applying for university places and jobs later on. • …and many go on to some form of language study in the future (university, joint honours, recreational language learning) • …and a lot spend time abroad (as au pairs, assistants, apprenticeships etc.) Chinese ? Arabic? … AND AFTERWARDS – LANGUAGES AT UNIVERSITY Russian ? Mandarin Cantonese Japanese Arabic Russian Polish Italian Portugeuse German French Spanish … basically any language you can imagine! On their own/with… International relations Politics Law/international law European studies Education Business studies Economics Finance Accounting Engineering International development International business Management On their own/with… Music Sociology Politics Geography Linguistics History Middle Eastern Studies English (lang/lit) Film studies International management Corporate strategy Philosophy Maths That’s potentially more than 450 extra choices at university! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4LJOVS6xxA Where can I go to boost my language skills??? … lessons obviously!!! (with revision/practise at home) … languages clubs in school (French club to be launched after ½ term) … private study and the internet – remember to be sensible with this … the exchanges and trips (Barcelona, Paris, Boulogne, and the 3 exchanges) … other enrichment opportunities from next year onwards (Taste of China, European challenge day, Aston uni)
