KNOW THIS!
The ancient Greeks all spoke the same language.
They believed in the same gods. They shared
a common heritage. They perceived themselves as
Greeks.
The ancient Greeks referred to themselves,
however, as citizens of their individual city-states.
Each city-state (polis) had its own personality,
goals, laws and customs. Ancient Greeks were
very loyal to their city-state.

We don’t know what they
called themselves
Can’t read their writing
Do not know what
language they spoke
(wasn’t Greek)
comes from their ruins
No evidence of
fortifications, so its
concluded that their
Aegean empire was based
on trade
Their written record

Minoa to Mycenae
1400 B.C.-Minoa mysteriously vanished;
theories of its disappearance include
volcanic eruption on the island of Thera
(230 years earlier), earthquake and invasion.
What is known for sure is that Minoan
culture was adapted by the Mycenaeans
and their demise paved the way for
Mycenaean dominance in the Aegean
Mycenae
Combination of city-
states on mainland
Greece (Thebes,
Athens, Mycenae)
Built fortified cities
Much more
militaristic than
Minoans
Fought in the Trojan
War
The Trojan War
Two possible causes:
Historians like to associate with economic rivalry
(Troy controlled the straits between the the
Aegean and Black seas-Dardanelles)
Homer said it was because the Trojan Paris took
Helen back to Troy with her and Menelaus (the
Greek King of Sparta) formed an army to get her
back
1870’s Heinrich Schliemann proves the war,
previously thought to be legend, actually occurred
Homer’s Illiad is still the main source of
information about the Trojan War
