early understandings related to
how written language or print is
organized and used- how it works
• Phonological Awareness awareness of words, rhyming
words, onsets and rimes,
syllables, and individual sounds

sound if a specific letter when that
letter is seen or heard

meaning
Reader’s Workshop
•
Definition: Time when students are exposed to a variety of text both
independently and with the support of the teacher, construct meaning and
make connections, learn a variety of comprehension strategies and apply
them to a wide genre of text
• Comprehension Instruction
• Exposure to On Level Text
– Text Characteristics
– Text Features
– Reading Behaviors

Guided Reading
•
Definition- instructional technique in which the teacher instructs a small
group of students at their level to foster literacy growth and development by
providing targeted, focused instruction
• 60 Minutes of the ELA Block
• Independent Reading
– Students read individually and silently
• Guided Reading (K-5)
-- Small group instruction with the same text.
– Homogeneous grouping
• Temporary, flexible groups
• 3 to 8 students
• Literature Circles (Upper Elementary)
– Small heterogeneous groups
– Students talk in depth about what they read
Guided Reading Instruction
• Assess to determine instructional level
• Monitor level via running records (importance
of cold reads and proper coding)
• Strategic planning using templates
designed for small group instruction
• Use of leveled checklists
• Comprehension and Word Study
Integration
• Data Collection at the Table
