Viking Pump manufactures rotary positive displacement pumps for nearly
every fluid and application. This site provides an overview of Vikings’ pump

Internal Gear Pumps
The Internal Gear, or Gear-Withina-Gear pumping principle, has a
motor driven rotor (outer gear)
which drives the inner (idler) gear.
As the teeth unmesh on the suction
side, it creates voids which allow
atmospheric pressure to force fluid
in. Fluid is carried on both sides of
a crescent, then the gears re-mesh
on the discharge side to force fluid
out. With only two moving parts,
the design is elegantly simple and
extremely reliable.

External Gear Pumps
The External Gear pumping
principle, has a drive gear and a
driven gear. As the gear teeth
rotate, they carry fluid from the
suction side to the discharge side,
where the gears mesh to force fluid
out. The precision-machined gears
have little slip, which allows the
pump to develop high pressures.

Rotary Lobe Pumps
The Rotary Lobe pumping principle
uses two rotors. These unmesh on
the suction side to allow
atmospheric pressure to draw fluid
in and carry it around the perimeter
of the casing, then the rotors mesh
on the discharge side to force fluid
out. Bi-, tri- and multi-lobe rotor
forms are available depending on
the fluid to be pumped, with biwing rotors shown here. The rotors
are driven by a timing gear to
prevent rotor-to-rotor contact. The
large voids created are particularly
suited to highly viscous fluids,
slurries and shear sensitive liquids.
