Objectives of XL-PON
 512 users (ONTs)
 Total reach up to 100km
 10Gbit/s downstream
 2.5Gbit/s upstream
 WDM in the feeder/metro Network
 ~65dB loss  40dB amplification required

Characteristics of the EDFAs
BEDFA (bidirectional)
 18dBm output power, NF <7dB
 13m EDF, 200mW pump power @ 980nm
 Output power controlled
PEDFA (downstream preamplifier, unidirectional)
 Low cost commercial type with uncooled pump @ 980nm
 Output power controlled

Summary and Conclusion
 A bidirectional amplification scheme for future XL-PONs was evaluated
 10Gbit/s downstream channel without distortion
 No penalty due to upstream channel
 2.5Gbit/s upstream channel without distortion
 Upstream BER within expectation
 Sufficient after FEC
 Reflections can be kept under control
 Low penalty in realistic network
 Power consumption < 4 W
