Plot Elements Review
• Exposition: The beginning of the story where the
reader meets characters and finds out the setting. The
readers is given background knowledge.
• Initiating Event: An event that causes something
else to occur.
• Rising Action: The events that lead up to the
most exciting part of the story. The conflicts
that get in the way of the main character.

• Climax: The most exciting part of the story.
The highest point of suspense in the story.
• Falling Action: The action or events that
follow the climax. The story begins to wind
down.
• Resolution: The final part of the plot, the
problem is solved. Always comes near the
end of the story.

• Pay attention to the movie. Jot down any
information you think you need to remember
in the movie.
• Look for the Exposition, Initiating Event, Rising
Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution.

Conflict:
A struggle or clash
between opposing
characters or opposing
forces.
Why is CONFLICT important?
• Without conflict, there is no plot!
• The plot diagram is created around
the conflict…
• Introduced in rising action…
• Is faced head-on during climax…
• Begins to work itself out during falling
action…
• Is resolved during resolution…

Internal Conflict:
A struggle that takes
place within the
character’s mind
Usually has to do with a choice
between right and wrong
Internal Conflict:
For EXAMPLE –
A character may be
struggling against fear or
loneliness or even being
a sore loser.
External Conflict:
A struggle between a
character and some
outside force…

1. Individual vs. Individual
A character struggles with
another character.
Could be a classic “good guy” vs. “bad guy” situation.

2. Individual vs. Nature
A character struggles with a
force of nature (natural
disaster, animal, etc)
Usually, the character is struggling to survive.

3. Individual vs. Society
A character fights against the
society they live in – against
social traditions or rules
(freedom, rights)

Supernatural
A struggle between a
character and ghosts, gods,
monsters, spirits, aliens, etc.

A struggle between a
character and computers,
