DARPA - www.darpa.mil
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) was established in 1958 to
prevent strategic surprise from negatively impacting U.S. national security and create
strategic surprise for U.S. adversaries by maintaining the technological superiority of
the U.S. military.
To fulfill its mission, the Agency relies on diverse performers to apply multi-disciplinary
approaches to both advance knowledge through basic research and create innovative
technologies that address current practical problems through applied
research. DARPA’s scientific investigations span the gamut from laboratory efforts to
the creation of full-scale technology demonstrations in the fields of biology, medicine,
computer science, chemistry, physics, engineering, mathematics, material sciences,
social sciences, neurosciences and more. As the DoD’s primary innovation engine,
DARPA undertakes projects that are finite in duration but that create lasting
revolutionary change.
50% success is the goal – proposals should strive to improve state-of-the-art 10X
2012 Budget - $3.25B, examples of spending programs $294M for C3, $283M for
Information technology, $243M for sensor technology, $206M for advanced electronics,
$220M advanced systems, $143M cognitive computing, $140M for network centric
systems ( NSF $7.0B, NIH $31B )
Types of funding: 6.1 (Basic Research), 6.2 (Applied Research), 6.3 (Prototype
development)
Offices
AEO – Adaptive Execution Office
The Adaptive Execution Office (AEO) prepares and coordinates field trials
of advanced technology developed by DARPA. At any point in time, DARPA has
technologies in all stages of development, from nascent idea to system ready for
fielding.
DSO – Defense Sciences Office
DARPA’s Defense Sciences Office (DSO) programs bridge the gap from
fundamental science to applications by identifying and pursuing the most promising
ideas within the science and engineering research communities and transforming
these ideas into new DoD capabilities. – Physical sciences, neuroscience, materials,
mathematics, biology
Offices
I2O – Information Innovation Office
I2O aims to ensure U.S. technological superiority in all areas where
information can provide a decisive military advantage. This includes the
conventional defense mission areas where information has already driven a
revolution in military affairs: intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance,
command, control, communications, computing, networking, decision-making,
planning, training, mission rehearsal, and operations support. – Understand,
empower, connect
MTO – Microsystems Technology Office
The Microsystems Technology Office (MTO) supports DARPA’s mission
of creating and preventing strategic surprise by investing in areas such as
microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), electronics, computing, photonics and
biotechnology. - Biological platforms, computing, electronic warfare,
manufacturing, novel concepts, photonics, position-navigation-training, thermal
managament
Offices
STO – Strategic Technology Office
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Strategic
Technology Office (STO) undertakes research and development of innovative
technologies to support the Department of Defense (DoD) mission in current and
emerging strategic areas including: Finding Difficult Targets; Communications,
Electronic Warfare, and Networks; Shaping the Environment; and Foundational
Strategic Technologies. - Communications-networks and electronic warfare,
shaping the environment, finding the difficult targets, foundational strategic
technologies
TTO – Tactical Technology Office
TTO transforms the future of warfighting by pursuing high-risk, high
payoff tactical technology and development of rapid, mobile and responsive
combat capability for advanced weapons, platforms and space systems. –
Advanced platforms, Advanced space systems, Advanced weapon systems
