A Brief Introduction to
LANZHOU JIAOTONG UNIVERSITY
Lanzhou Jiaotong
University, formerly known
as Lanzhou Railway
University ,was established
in 1958 through the transfer
of departments and
sections from two Chinese
railway colleges of high
repute: Tangshan Railway
Institute ( the present
Southwest Jiaotong
University) and Beijing
Railway Institute ( the
present Beijing Jiaotong
University).
On April 16th, 2003, with the approval of the Ministry
of Education, Lanzhou Railway University changed its name
to Lanzhou Jiaotong University.
After 48 years of
construction and
development, Lanzhou
Jiaoton University ranks
as a comprehensive
technical institution.
Now, the university
occupies:
a campus area in excess
of 1,454 mu (239.5 acres),
teaching facilities of
more than 576,000
square meters
a total capital of over 783
million yuan (US$97.88
million )
The University has over 69 laboratories, research
institutes and centers, among which, there are 5
provincial/ ministerial key labs and 5 qualified testing
and evaluating centers.
The library, enlarged in
2005 with an investment
over 130 million yuan
(US$ 16.25 million) and
equipped with an
international on-line data
retrieval system,
amasses a collection of
1,597,000 books including
42,000 e-books.
The University has one of the most extensive campus
broad band networks in the Northwest of China, which
is of over 30 kilometers optical cables and more than
11,000 nodes.
The university employs
2,355 educational
professions including 1,293
teachers.
Among the teachers, there
are 540 professors and
associate professors.

The university has also engaged 234 professionals as
honorary or visiting professor, as well as 53 overseas
specialists as foreign teachers.
The university’s current enrollment totals
17,000 full time undergraduates,
1,800 graduates,
and 12,000 participates in the continuing
education courses.
For 5 years in a row, the University’s
employment rate has exceeded 93.8%. As has
been reported by provincial and national mass
media, it is the highest in Gansu province.
The University has graduated more than 50,000
highly trained engineers and managers for both
the railways and local transportation concerns.

LZJTU has been entitled to grant
bachelor’s degrees in 46 majors
master’s degrees in 60 majors
doctoral degrees in 12 majors.
Among them, 8 are the key
disciplines in provincial level.
The university has been taking radical
measures to enhance scientific research
and technical development.
In the past 5 years, the university has
taken on 1,258 scientific research projects,
including 17 national ones and 275
provincial/ministerial ones, with funds
totaling 220 million yuan (US$27.5
million).
“The China Railway Computerized Ticket Booking
System”, which the university participated in its
designing and development, won a first prize for
State scientific and technological advancement.
“Theoretical Research and Execution Project of
Engineering Designing in Qinghai-Tibet High Altitude
and Cold Areas”, in which the University actively
participated, won a second prize in the same
competition.
The University also participated in the
constructions of Qinghai-Tibet Railroad on some
designing tasks and surveys.
The Lanzhou Jiaotong University Science and Technology
District, covering an area of 222.25 mu (36.61 acres), has
been built, to cultivate more high-tech personnel and to be
as a base to practice the new technologies.
LZJTU has always given priority to international scientific
research, co-operation and academic exchanges. In the
past five years, the university has
sent more than 150 young and middle–aged teachers to
study or visit abroad,
invited over 100 foreign experts and professors to conduct
lectures and organize seminars,
established co-operative relations with universities and
scientific research institutes from countries such as the
United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia,
Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden, South Korea,
Netherlands, Ukraine and Russia.
In the year of 2005, the university began enrolling
overseas students in various specialties. At
present, there are 3 studying at the university.
From 2004 to 2008, the University plans to lay a solid
foundation for developing the University into one of the
finest first- class academic institutions in the Northwest.
From 2009 to 2013, we will build the University into a
noticeable institution with remarkable scientific research
capacity.
From 2014 to 2018, we will turn the University into a highlevel, comprehensive, scientific research oriented center
with a dominant position in transportation and
communications, thereby realizing our development goals
by the 60th anniversary of the founding of LZJTU.
Lanzhou Jiaotong University, as one of the two engineering
universities in Gansu province, has a dominant position
over the other universities located in this province and in
the northwest part of China.
With the joint education program, the university will
hopefully be among the first-rate universities in future.
