External Environmental Scan
TRENDS
Economic: unfunded mandates, globalization, aging population,
cost of higher education, deficits, foreign manufacturing,
population trend, Mendon vs. Upton economics, infrastructure
issues in towns, growth, age demographics, proposition 2 ½,
income/wealth gap, etc….
Political: changing legislature, aging population, war in middle
east, overrides, apathy, tolerance, unfunded educational
mandates, DOE commissioner, etc…
Social: changing family structures, character education, diverse
culture, substance abuse, sense of entitlement, parenting styles,
safety concerns, working in teams, lack of personal
responsibility, etc…
Educational: longer school day, special education, globalization,
critical thinkers, gifted and talented programs, staff shortages,
magnet schools, technology, Computer based learning, etc…

• Goal 1. To continuously improve the process of teaching
and learning through examination of curriculum,
instruction and assessment Pre K-12
– To develop and implement a coherent and articulated Pre K12 curriculum
– To implement and expand instructional strategies to meet the
needs of all learners
– To demonstrate improved student performance through the
use of a variety of assessment tools
