Mission Statement
The AALAS Foundation supports
educational outreach on the essential
role of responsible laboratory animal
care and use in science to advance
human and animal health.
The AALAS Foundation is a
Separate 501(c) 3 Organization
• In 1999 the AALAS Foundation recognized the need to separate
from AALAS to focus on charitable activities, achieve more
visibility, and raise the comfort level of prospective donors
• By becoming a separate 501(c) 3 organization, the Foundation
Board has sufficient independence to permit originality, creativity
and sound management of its endeavors
• At the same time, the Board can ensure that their activities are
not at cross purposes with those of AALAS.
What Does the Foundation Do?
• The future of our profession and biomedical science depends
on promoting the benefits of biomedical research through
public outreach and training.
With your donations, we fund:
• The development of projects, educational materials, webbased public information resources, training, and other
innovative efforts.
• These items help educate the public, students, and our friends
and children about the importance of quality laboratory animal
care, research, and medicine.

Frog Online Course:
•
•
•
•
A course covering anatomy,
physiology, ecology, biomedical
research, and careers.
This course will include exams and
observation labs.
Will be completed in April and
available on the Kids 4 Research
website.
For high school classrooms, this will
cover national science standards;
such as recording observations,
graphing, and analyzing data.

with public outreach and why public
outreach is so important.
Helps identify opportunities and how to
tailor presentations to varying age
groups.

Outreach at Teacher
Conferences:
AALAS Foundation staff
exhibits at various
science/agricultural teacher
conferences throughout the
year. Teachers and students
are provided with resources
that promote the role of
responsible lab animal care
and use in science.

This poster discusses
fun facts about animals
and how research
designed for humans
help animals too.

“Accept the Challenge to Care: Careers
in Laboratory Animal Science” DVD
•
•
•
Informs students about the variety of careers
in laboratory animal science.
Through interviews with professionals in the
field, students can learn more about
biomedical research using animals, its
necessity, and the importance of the work.

“Careers in Biomedical Research” Brochure
A joint project between the California Society for Biomedical Research and
the AALAS Foundation, this comprehensive brochure covers a wide range
of career options in biomedical research. This brochure encourages youth
to seek careers in biomedical research, educates teachers and counselors
about career options, and promotes an awareness of animal research and
its benefits. The brochure is available through the Foundation and the
AALAS Bookstore.
AALAS Learning Library (ALL) Web-Based Training
Funded by a $125,000 grant from Merck & Company, Inc. to the
Foundation, AALAS is developing web-based training courses on animal
research biomethodologies for common laboratory animal species on the
AALAS Learning Library (www.aalaslearninglibrary.org).
www.kids4research.org
This site provides age-appropriate materials, games, and activities for
students, teachers, and parents (funded by Charles River).
Why Give to the Foundation?
Your tax-deductible donations to the Foundation help
with public outreach training and education projects.
By donating to the Foundation, you also ...
• help ensure the future of lab animal research programs.
• help further public education and understanding.
• help counter those working against our profession and
the advancement of science.
• teach children about the importance of responsible lab
animal research.
• are recognized as a dedicated member in our field.
Ways to Give…
Gifts May Be Made Several Ways:
• A monetary gift by check, cash, or credit card.
• A monetary pledge to be fulfilled over a set period of
years.
• A monetary gift in honor or in memory of a loved one,

• A planned gift such as a bequest, gift of stock, or life
insurance.
• Through United Way (reference #060730).
• Through employer gift-matching programs.
More Ways to Give…
