Requirements
PC (Not Mac) with Windows NT or later
 128 MB RAM or more
 100 MB free hard disk space
 Write access to installation drive
 USB Port (if using flash drive)
 Connection to Internet


Installation Note


PDQ-Explore is designed to run as a client on a PC
that has Internet access to our PDQ server in Ann
Arbor:
pdq.psc.isr.umich.edu
By default the installation files should be copied to:


C:\Program Files\PDQ
If write access to C: is not available:


PDQ-Explore can be run from the flash drive or another
drive and file location: C:\PDQ, for example.
Changes to the explore.ini file may be necessary

Starting PDQ-Explore

If the PDQ-Explore icon is on the desktop:


If there is no icon on the desktop:



Double-Click on the PDQ-Explore icon
Go to the PDQ-Explore desktop or USB installation folder
Double-Click on explore.exe
Or alternatively if using the USB Flash Drive:


Start, Run, x:\pdq-x\explore.exe
Note: The USB drive letter (x:) is machine dependent and is
likely to be D or E

Getting Started








Confirm server: pdq.psc.isr.umich.edu
No subscriber name/password is required
Enter/Enter/Enter until “Open” window appears
Double-Click on “Examples” workspace
Select and expand “ipacs10” data set
Expand “housing” or “person” variable list
Browse through variable list
Open and browse IPUMS documentation:
http://usa.ipums.org/usa

Set Up Query
Select a data set (ipacs10)
 Right click (or click on the “Query” tab)
 Click on “Setup New Expert Query”
 Setup window opens
 Fill in the blanks (see the following slides and
related handouts)
 Click on the “Results” tab


Plug USB Flash Drive into computer USB port
Flash Drive will be recognized as new hardware
Browser window will open displaying drive contents (or browse to drive)
Double-click on the PDQ-D or PDQ-E icon as appropriate for drive location
Double-click on explore.exe icon
<Enter> four (4) times to accept defaults up to “Open” window
If error, click OK to accept the default drive
Double click on NPC2010
Workspace window will open
Expand ipacs10 “Housing” and “Person” entries
Right click in left panel or Click on “Query” tab
Click on “Setup New Expert Query”
