Promotion, Retention, Award of Credit

 Students are promoted from grade to grade, or awarded credit for a course, based on their mastery of the knowledge and skills. Students receive credit for a course when they have met all the state and local requirements for that credit.

 Students are promoted to the next grade once they receive five credits during the present school year.

 Opportunities for credit recovery are limited. This option is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Distinguished Plan

 The Distinguished Plan is similar to the Recommended Plan with the following differences:  Students must complete three years of a foreign language (one less in the general electives category).

Advanced Placement Courses

 Students taking AP courses will have 10 points added to their final grade in that class at the end of each year. The additional grade points on the grade are used solely for ranking purposes and will not be reflected on your child’s official transcript.

 Students have the option of taking a corresponding AP exam. 9 5/1/2020

As high school counselors , we are available to help students with questions about planning their course of instruction, assisting with the application process for post-secondary education programs and guiding students as they seek scholarships and financial assistance.

We are also available to talk and listen to students about situations and experiences that may be affecting them educationally, socially and emotionally.

A New Assessment Model

 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness(STAAR)  Grades 9-12 will be assessed by 12* End-of-Course (EOC) assessments.

 The new end-of-course assessments will address only the TEKS for a given course, as opposed to the high school level TAKS assessments, which address TEKS from multiple courses.

*Eng I, II, and III each have a Reading and a Writing component, which are scored and reported separately.

STAAR EOC and Course Grades

 SB 1031 requires that EOC scores count as 15% of final course grades.

 Many districts, including Bowie ISD, grant credit by semester, not end-of-course.

 This requirement was set to begin in 2011-2012, but the Commission of Education granted the option of a one-year deferral.

 Grading policies are set by each district. Bowie ISD is waiting further clarification regarding the 15% policy toward final course grades and G.P.A.

Career & Technical Education

 In the past “vocational education” was reserved for preparing students for entry level jobs upon high school graduation.

 Now, Career & Technical Education provides individuals with coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in current or emerging professions.

Facts about CTE

 Students are 4x more likely to drop out of school when not enrolled in a CTE program  Students who combine a college-preparatory academic curriculum with a specific CTE sequence had gains in math, reading and science test scores   Nearly one-third of the fastest growing occupations will require an associate’s degree or a postsecondary vocational certificate, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report. Secondary students who graduate with a career and technical education concentration are 2 ½ times more likely to be employed while pursuing postsecondary education than are “college prep” students.
