Fun Questions
• Since Wally is a big football fan (soccer
for those of you in USA), What is
Wally’s favorite team?
• Do you watch Bing Bang Theory? If so,
who is your favorite character?
• Is there really a trouble makers list? If
so, who is the # one name on it from
product team?
Question #1
• How many systems have you
configured yourself?
Question #2
• Wally, can you go over the changes to
Software Updates in SCCM 2012?
Question #3
• Why there is no support for nonMicrosoft Operating Systems without
partner extension packs, like OpsMgr ?
Can I say that ConfigMgr 2012 will be
the better management solution if I
compare it to other software? Will
ConfigMgr be replaced by Intune after
several years ? Why ConfigMgr 2012
does not contain a real time monitor for
clients installation ?
Question #4
• What's is the news about SCCM 2012
and APP-V integration? Maybe
something like SCCM + FEP?
Question #5
• From SMS to SCCM, some schema
extensions modifications, what about
SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012, is there
many modifications?
Question #6
• Any plans to do two exams (one for
plan, other for admin) for new SCCM
2012 certification?
Question #7
• With the new app model a bunch of
new log files are created on the client
side. But why are they so hard to
read?? Why didn't Microsoft added the
Application names on the log files
instead of Application GUIDs. It is so
hard to define which requirement,
dependecy it is evaluating and why
they do not apply for some reason. Any
tips?
Question #8
• How can I setup a self-service site for
staff to pick and choose software for
delivery by SCCM?
Question #9
• I am currently running my reporting
from the built in reporting with SCCM,
how hard is it to migrate to SRS?
Question #10
• Any tips on how to remember
everything? CM has so many things it
can do since the 2.0 days, that I'm
finding it hard to keep up.
Question #11
• Right now SCCM 2007 R2 SP2 is very
reactionary as far as how it displays
data, is there any plans in SCCM 2012
or future versions to make the info
displayed in the Dashboard more
dynamic instead of static info that is
updated every 24 hours for some
items?
Question #12
• Please, there is any plans to integration
between SCCM and Windows Intune?
maybe use Intune client instead SCCM
IBCM.
Question #13
• Is there a easy way to pull detailed
report on all my systems... it looks like
all my reports show one piece of
information or another. I need a
complete report on computer name,
OS, memory, CPU, etc.
Question #14
• How can I tell if users have downloaded
and installed software from the
internet?
Question #15
• Are there any thoughts on SCCM clients having
capability to be multi-homed (even if for certain
functionality)? I am thinking of companies
having a need to deploy software, enforce
security (patch, FEP) and compliance, and
generally having knowledge of systems (on their
network and using their resources) that may not
be directly owned by them. i.e. "Bring-your-ownpc", service providers on premises, contactors
& consultants; who all can have systems that
are managed by other SCCM (or even InTune)
infrastructures. <I believe SCOM agents can be
multi-homed today.>
Question #16
• Wally, what are your recommendations
for how to train your field support staff
on the basics of SCCM, how it will be
an asset to them, and how to
troubleshoot common issues?
Question #17
• Hi Wally - I have been patching desktops
using SCCM 2007 and now have been
tasked with patching servers. Obviously I
want to be as unobtrusive as possible (re reboots, installing patches, agent etc) when
dealing with our servers. Would you
recommend staying with the SCCM agent
based method (the agent IS needed for
patching in SCCM correct?) or as i see some
do and use WSUS standalone for this task?
As an aside - can i setup both and actually
use both methods at the same time or does
one need to be dominant? Thanks for all the
great info you provide. - Jeff
Question #18
• One of the most challenging tasks in our
implementation of SW L:Icense
Management is tying in our Proof of
Entitlement to the deployed licenses
discovered. Often (usually) the product
identification on the PoE does not align to
the discovery information, resulting in
bulk generalizations and broad
assumptions in the reconciliation
process. Are there Best Practices for this
aspect - conceptually, not specific tool
dependent? Thank you.
Question #19
• Many of our client apps have been
migrated to web apps. How can I report
on web applications and intranet sites
used by my users?
Question #20
• I would like a naming standard, like CIM
introduces, so that during an audit the
technician can show the same OS as
SCCM reports. Also, why are Software
Instances so hard to detect? It seems
like a signature or tag would be more
standard but most products cannot tell
me the same type of software (Citrix
server, for example). Any help in SCCM
with that?
Question #21
• Thanks for doing this!!! A couple of
related questions: What are the current
patches for the SCCM Client, and how
does one install all of them via the
Console's Install Client function? As far
as I can tell, Microsoft states that only one
patch can be specified on the client push
command line, so repairing a client
becomes a tedious process. Other
question: Do you know of a way to push
the Console via SCCM? Much obliged,
Russell Johnson
Question #22
• As DCM has bug that it couldn't assess
more than 300 CIs (Microsoft Updates)
for a CBaseline. Let say if i create many
Baselines with less than 300 CIs & i
target all those CBaselines to a
machine, would it be possible to
assess those/that CBase on the
machine? Here i mn't putting many
(300) CIs (MS patches) in a CB, i m
putting many CBaselines with fewer CIs
(MS Patches).
Question #23
• Hi Wally, I want to know how can we
force the changes of NON client to
client to be updated on the server and
also need to verify the same through
the log file.
Question #24
• What's a simple way/method of
"burping" the workstation receiving a
patch; we experience a lot of "failure to
update" by workstations not even
acknowledging that a SCCM contol
patch is available.
Question #25
• I'd like to set up a query to check for
installed software on a collection and if
not installed move to a new collection
for scheduled installation. Query
collection for installed software and
then move to a completed installation
collection and run a report. Is this
possible?
Question #26
• Using Publisher 2011 for Adobe updates seems to be
very painful to use. I had to change my certificate. I
checked the box to resign the update with my new
certificate. I have not gotten it to work. Every client fails
the install on a certificate error. I am using a self signed
certificate. My next issue is trying to download the ever
changing Adobe Flash Player updates. I can manually
download the file from the link provided by Adobe.
However when I try to download the file in SCCM after
publishing it from publisher and syncing the repository
of SCCM, the download fails. Even copying the file
manually to the location as to complete my deployment
management object for this update fails at the end of the
wizard. The error recieved is ERROR:
DownloadContentFiles() failed with hr=0x80072ee7
Software Updates Patch Downloader 6/30/2011 10:02:04
AM 3288 (0x0CD8) Bottom line Publisher has been
nothing but frustrating. Am I missing something here?
Question #27
• Using SCCM remote control tools for PC's
coming in from a VPN is difficult. It seems
to be a name resolution problem, because
the connection times out. We're using
Juniper VPN, WAN distant VPN
concentrator, and don't have local control
over the DNS server. Also, there's latency
in network, zone transfers are not up to
date. SCCM remote control tools are a
definate benefit for us.....how can we
improve the situation?
Question #28
• I would like to create a powershell
function that would replicate the
"Systems by Last Logged On User"
query in SCCM2007. What would be the
best mechanism for sending a query to
the ConfigMgr and then viewing the
results? A function that took in a user
name and listed the systems that user
has logged on to recently would work
as well. So far the configmgr DB seems
to be the best way of doing that.
Question #29
• I know SCCM could support wake on
LAN, and bypass BIOS password. But
could SCCM bypass hdd password as
well?
Question #30
• During a OS Deployment within a in-place
refresh or side-by-side migration scenario
- the bigest gap in SCCM/MDT we find is,
during a OS deployment having a way to
automate what what non-mandatory
applications to install during a OS
Deployment based on what they had
previously. For example, if MSFT Visio is
not part of the image, but the end-user
had it installed, is there a way to have
SCCM detect it and reinstall the nonmandatory application during a OS
Deployment? Thanks! -Matt
Question #31
• What are Enterprise-grade alternatives
to USMT for user state migration to use
with SCCM OSD scenarios. Looking for
something that does a better job
migrating Office (Word in particular)
and is easier to customize (adding
support for our own applications)?
Question #32
• What do we need to plan and
implement in our SCCM environment
for Advanced Format Drives? Patches,
WinPE, Image creation, Partition
Alignment, etc...
Question #33
• Dear Wally, I have a question about
driver packaging for PC model Dell
Precision Workstation 390 for Win XP
x64. The driver CAB file is not
available.I manually downloaded all the
drivers for this model for the mentioned
OS.some of them are driver
applications (exe). Does config
manager accept exe files when creating
a driver package or does it have to be
an inf file to be detected by SCCM?
Question #34
• I'm running into problems pushing a
task sequence to host machines. I keep
seeing a referral to
"OnContentAvailable invalid request
GUID handle" when I look at the
execmgr.log on the host machine. Can
you provide me information to what
this error is referring and where to look
to fix the problem?
Question #35
• I deployed an OS image of 7 GB's in
size. I watched it transfer over with the
sender log, work for a few days
(showing a status of 1 for being there
on the secondary) then it without any
change to the package or anything
happening on my part changed back to
0 on the secondary and Primary (the
package still existed under SMSPKG
and SMSPKG$ when manually
searched. What does this mean?
Question #36
• Windows Deployment Services (WDS)
is a cool feature that we can't seem to
implement effectively. Essentially driver
updates seem to be a pain, injecting the
updated driver into the image is labor
intensive. Do you have some tips?
