Slide 7
Small Steps Big Changes
• A pivotal point
• “The first meeting was pretty much dominated by the City
Council at that stage…and when it came to which
organisation was going to lead CityCare put their hand up,
I genuinely laughed because I thought –you’re the
NHS…”
Slide 8
Quotes
• There was concern initially, hang on CityCare are just the
NHS with a different name…but through talking to
CityCare.. it gave a much clearer idea that actually they
are on our side with this…
• I was worried about much smaller organisations in the
City, I worried that they would feel ..kind of, usurped
Slide 9
Quotes
• When we first took on the lead I thought we would get
heat from the third sector.. .I thought they would be
banging on about us all the time.. and actually apart from
the initial bit of heat ..we haven’t had that
• Its connected health more to voluntary organisations, it
was quite interesting watching the interaction….how both
sides were learning off each other
Slide 10
What are the implications
• We have co-produced a strategy for 0-3 year olds with
local people, leaders from all sectors and gained resource
to help achieve this
• Raised our collective profile, best of the best
• Opportunity to influence how we achieve outcomes
nationally, internationally
• Genuinely led by CVS
Slide 11
What have we learned
• As a Social Enterprise we have grown by 31% at a time of
austerity. Becoming a business with a social mission
• We are a key system innovator and others are learning
from us at national, regional and local level. Most of
innovation comes from staff ideas
• We are part of our community and not just there to deliver
services to others
• We are comfortable in our own hybrid shoes
• Respecting and connecting with others is vital
Slide 12
Next steps
• Supporting the system through CityCare Connect
• Developing a cross sector E3 hub that engages local
people
• Creating high CVS quality student placements for a new
workforce
• Exploring new opportunities for joint working and
integration
• Responding to new commissioning models
Slide 13
The Future
The Kings Fund
• The sector is an increasingly important part of the health
and social care jigsaw: approximately 40,000 third sector
organisations work in health and social care, and the
sector hosts many of the three million health and social
care volunteers.
• The NHS must find new ways to engage with them and to
learn from the leadership that they bring to their
organisations and the wider health system.
Slide 15
Final thoughts
“ Statutory services cannot fix everything. It is time to
recognise, support and invest in the huge
contribution of carers, volunteers, engaged citizens
and the voluntary community sector in helping
individuals and shaping services. It is time to work
with citizens and communities as equals. This
requires a shift in mind-set, behaviours and
processes”
