MYSTERY
Denotes something
hidden, beyond
merely human,
which can only be
known fully if it is
revealed by a
superior power.
SIGN
Something that
points beyond itself.
It leads to some
other thing or reality
extrinsic to itself.
SACRAMENT
It is a symbol or symbolic action.
It represents something through
which something other than itself
is incarnated or encountered.
Unlike sign, sacrament does not
merely point beyond itself or lead
to something or someone else.
It embodies and mediates that
which it symbolizes or
represents.
CHURCH AS MYSTERY
Church is not merely
earthly or human reality.
It is not something of
human intention.
It is not something of
human fabrication.
It is not a human
institution.
CHURCH AS MYSTERY
It is divine reality inserted into
human history and cannot be
fully captured by human
thought and language.
Its origin is divine , making it a
mystery.
The Church is a sacrament – a
sign and instrument of
communion with God and of
the unity of the entire human
race.
