FAMU’s Philosophy of Assessment
Florida A&M University (FAMU) chooses to define assessment as
“the systematic process of documenting and analyzing the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes to ensure that the expectations and standards are met in fulfilling the mission of FAMU. The process includes monitoring and enhancing the administrative and educational support structure that leads to the continuous quality improvement of FAMU’s faculty, staff and student programs and services”.

A successful Florida A&M University graduate should exhibit the following characteristics:
Higher learning and development skills Substantive knowledge in a chosen major field of study Is a critical thinker Effective verbal and written communication skills Prepared for lifelong learning beyond the baccalaureate degree Equipped to succeed in the chosen career field Prepared to assume a leading role in the community of choice Satisfied with the quality of the educational experience provided by Florida A&M University

Ways Faculty Participate in Assessment
Read your division’s assessment plan. Claim ownership!
Communicate the importance of assessment to other faculty, students, and staff.
Discuss results with faculty, students, and staff. Implement strategies for improvement.
Revise learning outcomes as needed.
Attend assessment workshops, seminars, roundtables, etc.

Reminders:
Division meetings should include assessment as a standing agenda item Assessment plans must be reviewed and approved at the division level before submission to the school level Division minutes should reflect total faculty collaboration (e-mail minutes to SOAHS Assessment Chair)
Provide evidence (data/documents) for inclusion in the division’s assessment notebooks:
– ALC/assessment plan – Agenda, minutes – Instruments, survey results, spreadsheets,
samples of student work
