NSF Strategic Plan
Investing in America’s Future
FY 2006 - 2011
NSF employs four core
strategies that cut across all NSF
programs and activities (Ideas,
Tools, People, Organizational
Excellence).
People – Developing a diverse,
competitive, and globallyengaged U.S. workforce of
scientists, engineers, and
technologists, and a wellprepared citizenry
2
EHR Mission
To promote the development of a diverse
and well-prepared workforce of scientists,
technicians, engineers, mathematicians
and educators and a well-informed
citizenry who have access to the ideas
and tools of science and engineering.
3
EHR Goals
Prepare the next generation of STEM professionals
and attract and retain more Americans to STEM
careers.
Develop a robust research community that will
support excellence in STEM education and that
integrates research and education.
Increase the technological, scientific and quantitative
literacy of all Americans.
Broaden participation and close achievement gaps in
all STEM fields.

Capacity-Building Strategies
Identify
effective ways to:
Prepare and support faculty who can
inspire and challenge students in the STEM
disciplines
Provide faculty with effective materials and
strategies to promote and assess learning
Address (formally and informally) STEM
knowledge requirements of adults
22
Capacity-Building Strategies
Invest in research on learning
Facilitate the translation of research into
practice
Create supportive learning environments and
pathways by developing models of
reform/systemic change at both institutional
and multi-institutional levels through
