Entrepreneurship research case
Role of Gender in Business Financing
• ESRC-funded research
• Why do women use less finance than men when starting a
business?
– Demand side (entrepreneurs)
– Supply side (bank loan officers)
• Impact on banking practice and government policy
• Bank lending criteria and processes inadvertently impact on
lending into women-owned firms
• UK Government £12m capital fund for women introduced in 2009
Marketing research case
Customer Equity Drivers of Future Sales: This study
investigates the relationship between customer attitudes and
future purchase behaviour (i.e. sales)
• Key findings: Customer equity drivers predict future behaviour
and help to direct resource investments. However, costs of
managing the loyalty scheme may outweigh gains from better
understanding customer behaviour.
• Key implication: loyalty schemes only pay off if
data/information acquired is used to improve customer equity
drivers. If not, it is a waste of company resources!
• Practical impact: research findings lead a major European
retailer to leave their loyalty scheme
Marketing
Conceptual Model
Management Science Risk case
• Investigate the capacity and condition of the main cable
anchorages of the Forth Road Bridge
– Estimating uncertainty under different
numbers of possible test samples
– Explore pre-posterior probabilities
under different possible future scenarios
• Use expert judgement to qualitatively structure
model and populate with probabilities
• Use probabilistic model to compare efficacy of
different tests and compare different sample sizes
within these tests
• Once test data becomes available, update model
to assess the capacity/condition of the bridge
Accounting & Finance research case
• Report on the ICL/Stockline
disaster – the worst
mainland health and safety
incident in Scotland for 50
years – produced by a
multi-disciplinary team of
academics and experts.
• Referenced by the
subsequent Public Inquiry
and formed the basis for a
new stream of academic
publications
•
On 11 May 2004, nine workers were killed and more than thirty-three injured
•
ICL situated less than two miles for Strathclyde university
•
On August 17th 2007, the operators of ICL Tech Ltd and ICL Plastics Ltd pled guilty
to four health and safety charges which had led to the deaths and injuries.
•
Forensic accounting showed that the company had large cash holdings (30th
November 2003 £897,51; 30th November 2004 £455,187; 30th November 2005
£749,950). Yet the company was fined in total £400,000
•
The report brought important information which would otherwise have been
uncovered into the public domain. The point of the research was to enable policy
changes to be made to prevent the reoccurrence of other similar disasters.
