Gemini is a new Distribution and Control&Command
insulating switchboard

Gemini can be used for different applications for
commercial and industrial sectors (and for some
residential applications):

Control & Command (automation) of machinery, apparatus,…

Distribution (with traditional use of modular apparatus)

By using partial plates to be inserted in the frame, Gemini can
also be used for mixed applications

Overview

The Gemini enclosures fully comply with the
requirements of the EN 50298 (IMQ approval) and IEC
60670, and allow the configuration of boards required by
IEC 60439-1 Standard

Overview
IP degree: IP66

Gemini has a very high degree of protection

The IP degree indicates the degree of protection against
the penetration of solid bodies (first digit) and against
water penetration (second digit)

The 1st “6” means “totally dust proof” (no dust can
penetrate)

The 2nd “6” means protected against jets of water similar to
sea waves

Overview
Double insulation and IK degree

Gemini is an insulating enclosure. The double insulation
symbol means that Gemini provides a protection against
indirect contacts.

The mechanical resistance is 20 Joule. This means that
Gemini reaches the highest range of the IK degree: IK10
(EN 50102)

Overview
Glow Wire Test

Self-extinguishing degree of protection

GWT (Glow wire Test, according to IEC 60695-2-1
Standards): simulates the types of thermal stress in
order to assess the danger of fire using a simulation.

Gemini reaches a test temperature of 750°C
Overview

Environment
Gemini was born with a design goal of total recycling
capacity: a radical change introduced into a sector
dominated by a material not recyclable, such as
polyester.

A LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) report has been compiled
during the design phase

Gemini has adequate instructions on how to dispose the product
at the end of its life

The use of thermoplastic material has led to the production
of a switchboard which is 100% ecologically compatible


Material innovations
Almost all the competitors are offering GRP (glass
reinforced polyester) switchboards:

Gewiss: 46QP series

Hager: Londra series

Legrand: Marina series

Schneider/Sarel: Thalassa series

GE/Vynckier: Aria series

Himel: Polymel series
Only Scame offers a thermoplastic switchboard
(traditional single injection process)
Innovation
factors

© ABB SACE - 20

Material innovations
The Gemini thermoplastic material versus GRP:

has the same sturdiness

has the same mechanical features

has the same resistance to oils
plus:

keeps its mechanical features over time

is safe to handle (there are problems in polyester
panels due to the glass fibre contained in the GRP
coming to the surface)

is completely recyclable


The environmental
friendliness and
safety are major
issues to which
utility companies,
top GRP boxes
users, are more
and more
sensitive
Innovation
factors

Process innovations
The co injection process allows to get a sandwich
of two materials, with a compact external skin and an
expanded core
 Advantages

:
Allows to obtain a product less heavy than GRP:
average –20%
Allows to use 5/6 mm thickness for the box, so the
sturdiness is the same of the GRP products

Ordering information
You have two different ways to
order the Gemini switchboards:
1 a single code that comprises both box
and door (transparent or opaque) in the
“same package”. The door is not yet
assembled: first you complete the
wiring and then you assemble the door
© ABB SACE - 31
2 different codes for boxes and doors,
managed separately: this allows to
optimize the wholesalers’ shelf room
Velcro fixing points (on both the box and the
door packages) permit an easy transportation

GRP switchboards
Good mechanical properties

Disadvantages:

They’re not safe to handle due to the glass fiber
coming to surface

They lose their mechanical features after the glass
fiber coming to surface (limited UV resistance)

They’re not recyclable

They need tools to assemble the components

