Oxford (UK)
A brief trip
through images and texts
of its monuments and sights
Oxford has a population of 150,000 inhabitants and is
situated in the county Oxforshire, north-west of
London.
The town is home to the most famous and second oldest
university in the world.
Oxford is also called “the City of Dreaming Spires”.

The first mention of the University of
Oxford dates back to the 12th
century. Nowadays Oxford University
consists of thirty-eight colleges
divided into four divisions:
 Humanities,
 Medical Sciences,
 Mathematical,
Physical
and
Life
Sciences,
 Social Sciences.
The oldest colleges are University
College (1249), Balliol (1263) and
Merton (1264), while the oldest
residence hall is St Edmund Hall
(c.1225) (photo left).

The university is a “city university”: there is no campus; instead, the colleges, halls and
other university buildings are scattered all around the town.
To be a member of the university, all students must belong to a college or a hall, just as
in Cambridge.
Twenty-six British prime ministers, forty-seven Nobel prize winners, at least twelve
saints and twenty Archbishops have studied or taught at Oxford.
Until the 1820s Oxford and Cambridge were the only two existing universities in the UK.

Thirteen British prime ministers studied at Christ
Church, which is considered the most
aristocratic college. It was founded in 1546.
The college is mentioned in many literary works,
for example in Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. The buildings
and surrounds have also been used in many
films, recently in the Harry Potter series.
The Christ Church Chapel is also the cathedral
church for the diocese of Oxford.

The Bodleian Library consists of four buildings:
the old Bodleian Library, the Radcliffe
Camera, the Clarendon Building and the
New Bodleian Building. It was established
in 1602.
The library is one of the biggest in the world
with a collection of more than 11,000,000
items. In the library a Shakespeare First
Folio and a Gutenberg Bible are preserved.

-Mr. Bean’s TV series features a tune
performed by the Choir of Christ
Church Cathedral, Oxford. The words
sung during the title sequences are
in Latin:
 Ecce homo qui est faba – "Behold the
man who is a bean" (sung at
