Project Background
Presently, substation backup battery
systems are a single point of failure
within the power system
In the eastern U.S., utility companies
are required to have dual battery
backup system in any substation over
230kV
4
DC System
Operates station control equipment
(communication, relays, breakers,
alarms)
Battery bank used during power
outages to maintain control of
substation

DC Battery Bank
Bank of up to 60
cells
Each cell rated at
about 2.1V
Nominal Voltage of
~130V
Project Background
7
Battery Bank Sizing
Continuous load draws 5.5A for 8
hours to maintain station control
Momentary load of 142.8 A to be
supplied after 8 hours for breaker
control
Minimum Voltage ~105V

Customer Needs
1. Calculate reliability of present DC
battery system
2. Seek alternatives for a backup dc
storage supply and evaluate added
reliability
3. Implement scaled prototype on a
bench top system
9
Present Fault Tree
50 faults * 0.0212 = 1.06 failures/year
