ENVIRONMENT & MEDICAL
ISSUES
UNIT 8
GLOBAL WARMING
CAUSES
•Burning of Fossil Fuels (gas, coal &
oil). This causes CO2, which
produces a barrier in the atmosphere
like glass in a greenhouse, so heat
from the sun can get through but
can’t get back out causing earth’s
temperature to rise.
•Rising sea levels – risk of flooding
SOLUTIONS
•Use renewable forms of
energy (solar, wind, wave)
•Use electric cars instead
of petrol or diesel
•Improve the efficiency of
cars and so reduce
pollution produced
•Increase/improve the use
of public transport
ACID RAIN – caused by burning of
fossil fuels. Causes buildings & trees to
corrode
SOLUTIONS – use alternative fuels –
solar, wind, wave
HUMAN WASTE – This is waste that
humans produce – litter, refuse and
sewage
SOLUTIONS – recyle, reuse, fines for
people who drop litter etc
POLLUTION & SOLUTIONS
EUTROPHICATION – lack of oxygen in
rivers caused by fertilisers being washed
in streams – casues fish to die
SOLUTION – Encourage farmers to
organic farm – so fewer nitrates are
used in fertilisers
RADIOACTIVE POLLUTION –
Nuclear waste can take thousands of
years to become safe
SOLUTION – Reprocessing means
that 97% of waste is reused
POLLUTION & SOLUTIONS
SCARCITY OF NATURAL
RESOURCES





Natural resources such as oil, coal, iron, tin
copper & fertile land could soon run out
SOLUTIONS – use renewable resources –
solar, wind, wave etc
Use electric cars
Recycle materials
Alternative lifestyle – use only natural
products such as cotton, wool for clothes
and ride bikes instead of owning a car
CHRISTIANS & STEWARDSHIP
Look after things
so they can be
passed on to
future generations
In the book Of
Genesis – God
put humans here
to rule the earth
– as stewards
On Judgement Day, Christians will
be judged on how they have lived
their lives – good stewards or not
Responsibility of Christians to act as
stewards – reduce pollution and
preserve resources
Christians have a responsibility
to make sure the earth’s
resources are shared equally
Sharing resources fairly –
improve the standard of living of
those in poor countries
Islam & stewardship
As a Khalifah, Muslims should
reduce pollution and look after
resources
Shariah Law tells Muslims that
stewardship includes sharing the
earth’s resources fairly.
God created Allah as his KHALIFAH
(someone who looks after things –
steward)
Quran – Muslims are God’s
Khalifahs
Muslims will be judged by God on
how they have looked after the
earth.
INFERTILITY TREATMENTS
IVF – IN VITRO FERTILISATION –
when an egg is fertilised in a test
tube & then replaced in the womb
AIH – ARTIFICIAL
INSEMINATION BY HUSBAND –
Husband’s sperm is inserted
mechanically in to his wife
AID – ARTIFICIAL
INSEMINATION BY DONOR –
Sperm from a donor is inserted
into the womb
EGG DONATION – when a donated
egg is fertilised by IVF using husband’s
sperm & is then placed in the
mother’s womb
SURROGACY – when another woman
carries a baby for someone else (this may
involve donors or insemination from male
partner’s sperm)
CATHOLIC VIEW
OTHER CHRISTIAN VIEW
Life is given by God so noone has automatic right to
a child
 Only natural sex acts
should be involved
 Artificial insemination
involves masturbation =
sin
 IVF invloves wasting of
fertilised eggs – this is life =
goes against sanctity of life

Allow IVF & AIH…

Because it will be biological
offspring of parents

Discarded embryos are not
life yet

One purpose of marriage is
to have children so infertility
treatments cannot be bad

ALL CHRISTIANS SUPPORT
ADOPTION

CHRISTIANS & INFERTILITY
TREATMENTS
ISLAM & INFERTILITY
TREATMENTS
ISLAM ACCEPTS AIH & IVF – egg &
sperm are from the husband & wife
 All Muslims should have a family

Islam does not allow other treatments
because..
 The child will not know it’s natural
parents
 Egg or sperm donation is like adultery

IMPORTANCE OF ORGAN
Surgery is when organs are taken
DONATION Transplant
from one person & put into another to
replace an organ that is not working
Live donation – when kidneys and bone
marrow are taken from a living person
Organs such as heart, lungs, pancreas, etc are
taken from a dead person
It cures life-threatening diseases and
improves the quality of people’s lives
Transplants save over 3000 lives every year
More people need transplant surgery every
year so transplants are essential.
People donate organs as they know they will
not be needed after they have died.
CHRISTIANS & TRANSPLANT
SURGERY
MOST
CHRISTIANS
AGREE…
•The body is not
needed after death
•God will not need
the organs to raise
the body
•Leaving organs for
another is like charity
•Golden Rule
SOME CHRISTIANS
AGREE WITH LIVE
DONATION BUT
NOT FROM DEAD
PEOPLE…
•Playing God = Sin
•Organs such as the
heart are an essential
part of the person God
created
•Donating your living
organs = loving your
neighbour
SOME
CHRISTIANS
DISAGREE..
•It ignores sanctity of
life
•Playing God = sin
•Problem – who gets
the transplant – an
accident victim or
someone who is
waiting on the list
MUSLIMS & TRANSPLANT
SURGERY





Most Muslims DO NOT
AGREE…
Nothing should be removed
from the body after death
Playing God is a sin
Quran – Only God can give
and take life
Organs are needed for
resurrection on the Last
Day
