Calculating Pell LEU
Identify EFC and determine annual amount
Pell Disbursement / Scheduled award = Annual
percentage
600% minus student’s percentage = Pell amount
available
Pell not necessarily split evenly
Example
For 2013-2014, Johnny has a 0 efc. He is only attending
your school and he is a full time student for both
semesters. He is at 525% of his Pell LEU. How much
Pell should your school award Johnny?
Answer
600% – 525% = 75%
5645 x 75% = 4233.75
Fall semester Johnny receives $2,822.50
Spring semester Johnny receives $1,411.25
If your school rounded the Fall semester to $2,823, you
will need to reduce your spring to $1,410 to stay under
the 600%
More Pell
No minimum amount award
0 efc with 599.982% is $1
5082 efc with 599.83% is $1
Check before disbursing Pell
15 days to report Pell adjustments to COD
Disputing Pell LEU Accuracy
Documentation from the institution stating student
never attended or never received Pell there
If your school believes COD is not correct, contact
Federal Student Aid’s COD School Relations Center at
1-800-474-7268
Schools should not escalate the matter if the dispute
does not reduce it to less than 600%
Disputing Pell LEU Accuracy
If an error is found (2008-2014), school must make
corrections to COD and return the funds to G5
Before 2008 aid year, contact [email protected] or 1-
800-474-7268
What Students Need To Do
Current year FAFSA
Provide all documentation requested by the school
including a signed and dated statement with:
Current school
School with inaccurate Pell
Award year and disputed amount
Reason the student believes Pell is inaccurate
What Schools Should Do with a
Dispute
Check the Pell LEU on COD
Would the dispute bring the Pell LEU under 600%?
Check student’s date of birth and SSN
if there is discrepancy on either of these two items, the
case should be escalated
Check for errors at your school and other schools
You will need to contact other school to determine if
there was an error
