DUE- Monday by 8 AM
Describe the shape & volume of solid, liquid, & gas.
 Solid – definite shape, definite volume
 Liquid – no definite shape, definite volume
 Gas – no definite shape, no definite volume
Compare how the particles are packed in a solid, liquid, & gas.
 Solid – tight
 Liquid – farther apart
 Gas – loosely packed
Describe the particle movement in solid, liquid, & gas.
 Solid – shaking in place
 Liquid – moving a little faster
 Gas – fast moving
Describe the phase change melting.
 Solid to liquid
 Heat absorbed (gained)
 Particle move farther apart
Describe the phase change freezing.
 Liquid to solid
 Heat released (removed)
 Particles move slower
Describe the phase change evaporation.
 Liquid to gas
 Heat absorbed (added)
 Particles move faster
Describe the phase change condensation
 Gas to liquid
 Heat released (removed)
 Particles move slower
What is Solubility?
 How well a substance can
dissolve.
What is a solute?
 The substance being dissolved
What is a solvent?
 The substance doing the
dissolving
Identify the solute & solvent in
the following solutions:
 Salt water – Salt (solute) Water
(Solvent)
 Kool-aid Drink – Kool-aid Mix
(solute) Water (solvent)
How does temperature affect
solubility?
 The higher the temperature of the
solvent, the more soluble the
solute
How does surface area affect
solubility?
 The greater the surface area of
the solute, the faster the solute
will dissolve.
How can you increase the surface
area of a substance (sugar cube)?
 Break is up into smaller pieces
 Crush it
How does stirring affect solubility?
 When a solution is stirred, the
solute dissolves faster
70g
20o
45o
70o
Define weight.
 Weight is a measure of the pull of gravity on an object
How does the amount of gravity affect weight?
 The greater the gravitational force acting on an object,
the greater its weight.
Why do we have less weight on the moon?
 We have less weight on the moon because there is less
gravity on the moon than on earth.
What is buoyancy?
 The upward force of a fluid
Identify the physical
properties of matter.
 Color, phase of matter,
density, conductivity,
boiling point, odor, mass,
solubility, hardness,
freezing point
Identify the chemical
properties of matter.
 Flammable
 Reactivity
ILS Questions
Which property of a
substance indicates whether
the substance is a liquid or a
solid at room temperature?
(1) melting point
(2) electrical conductivity
(3) flexibility
(4) solubility
Under which conditions
would a sugar cube dissolve
most quickly when placed in
a liter of water at room
temperature?
(1) A whole sugar cube is
added and the water is stirred.
(2) A whole sugar cube is
added and the water is not
stirred.
(3) A crushed sugar cube is
added and the water is stirred.
(4) A crushed sugar cube is
added and the water is not
stirred.
ILS Question
All of the liquid from a test tube is poured
into a beaker, as shown in the diagram
below.
Compared to the liquid that was in the test
tube, the liquid in the beaker has
(1) a different volume, but the same shape
(2) a different volume and a different shape
(3) the same volume, but a different shape
(4) the same volume and the same shape
Diagrams A and B show models of how
the molecules of the same substance are
arranged in two different phases of
matter.
Which phases of matter are represented
by diagrams A and B?
ILS Question
The data table below shows that
as the pressure of a gas sample
was changed, the volume of the
gas changed. The pressure was
measured in atmospheres (atm)
and the volume was measured in
milliliters (mL).
According to the data table, as
the pressure of the gas increases,
the volume of the gas
(1) decreases
(2) increases
(3) remains the same
ILS QUESTIONS
The diagram represents four processes, labeled A, B, C, and
D, that occur when water changes phase.
Which process is represented by B?
(1) condensing (3) freezing
(2) evaporating (4) melting
Which two processes increase the motion of the molecules?
(1) A and B
(3) C and D
(2) B and C
(4) D and A
ILS Question
The graph shows the solubility
curves for a solid solute and a
gaseous solute.
How many grams of the solid solute
will dissolve in 100 grams of water
at 25°C?
Describe the relationship between
water temperature and the
solubility of the gaseous solute from
0°C to 15°C.
State one way to increase the rate at
which a solid solute dissolves in 100
grams of water.
