Potvrdni oblik pravilnih glagola tvori se dodavanjem nastavka –ed na infinitiv.
Past tense nepravilnih glagola uči se napamet.
Ako glagol završava na dodaje se nastavak –ed –y kojem prethodi samoglasnik . Ako je prije –y suglasnik tada ga ispuštamo i dodajemo nastavak –ied .
Upitni i niječni oblici tvore se uz pomoć pomoćnog glagola 'to do' koji u obliku za prošlost glasi
did
.
glavni glagol ostaje u infinitivu bez 'to'.

ODREĐENO VRIJEME ILI PERIOD
1.) The Past Simple koristimo za radnje završene u određenom vremenu ili periodu u prošlosti .
“A gally boy washed the dishes.” “We went to school.” Koristimo priložne oznake: yesterday, the other day, two/three days ago, last week/month/year itd.
2.) Ovo glagolsko vrijeme koristimo za radnju čije vrijeme nije navedeno ali:
(a) je bila u tijeku u periodu završenom u prošlosti .
“He sailed on the Vanga for four years.” (više ne plovi)
(b) se desila unutar perioda završenog u prošlosti .
“My grandfather once saw Marilyn Monroe.”

UOBIČAJENE R. I KRONOLOŠKI NIZ
3 .) The Past Simple Tense koristimo za izražavanje prošlih uobičajenih radnji i navika .
Koristimo priložne oznake vremena kao i kod uobičajenih radnji i navika u prezentu: always, never,
occasionally, often, sometimes, usually, seldom, rarely, constantly, every week/day/night/year, on
Mondays, twice a year itd.
“She always carried an umbrella.” “He never smoked.”
4.) Kada neistovremene prošle radnje navodimo u kronološkom nizu koristimo The Past Simple T.
“When I came home from school I had lunch and then I went out with my friends.”
