The Odyssey

Muse
• Definition: Noun, A daughter
of Zeus, credited with divine
inspiration.
• “The Odyssey” Sentence:
“Sing in me, Muse, and
through me tell the story…”
• Example Sentence: For many
years, Muses have inspired
artists into making some of the
most famous works of art
around the world.
Harried
 Definition: Adjective/verb, tormented, harassed.
 “The Odyssey” Sentence: “tell the story of that
man, the wanderer, harried for years on end”
 Example Sentence: At the fair, the little girl was
harried into going on a ride that she was not
comfortable riding.
Briskly
• Definition: Moving or
speaking quickly; quick,
efficient. Adverb.
• “The Odyssey” Sentence:
“We climbed, then,
briskly to the cave.”
• Example Sentence: The
man briskly made his
way to the train station.
Appalled
• Definition: Verb, to cause
(someone) to feel fear, shock,
or disgust.
• “The Odyssey” Sentence:
“We cried aloud, lifting our
hands to Zeus, powerless,
looking on at this, appalled.”
• Example Sentence: A gasp
escaped the woman as she
watched the appalling scene
unfold before her.
Ponderous
• Definition- Adjective, of very great weight,
bulky in clumsy way.
• “The Odyssey” Sentence- “If I killed him we
perished there as well, for we could never
move his ponderous doorway slap aside.”
• Example sentence- The workers moved at a
snails pace, knowing that they would never
finish their ponderous work.
Profusion
• Definition: Noun, a large
amount of something.
• “The Odyssey” Sentence- “I
held this in the fire’s heart and
turned it, toughening it, then
hid it, well back in the cavern,
under one of the dung piles in
profusion there.”
• Example sentence: The flowers
grew with profusion,
blossoming into big beautiful
colors.
Ambrosia
• Definition: Noun, something
pleasing to taste or smell,
relates; the food of the gods.
• “The Odyssey” Sentence:
“But here’s a bit of nectar
and ambrosia!”
• Example sentence: When I
walked into my home after a
long day, the ambrosia of
apple pie filled the air.
Meditation
◙ Definition: Noun, continued
or extended thought;
reflection; contemplation,
◙ “The Odyssey” sentence:
“Last of them all my ram,
the leader, came, weighted
by wool and me with my
meditations.”
◙ Example sentence: Before a
big test Leah likes to
meditate, to clear her mind.
Linger
→Definition: Verb, to remain or
stay at, or in a place longer
than usual or expected
→ “The Odyssey” sentence:
“You never linger so, but
graze before them all, and go
afar to crop sweet grass.”
→Example sentence: My friend
was supposed to meet me three
hours ago, so I just lingered
around.
Adversary
♦ Definition: Noun, a person,
group, or force that opposes or
attacks; opponent.
♦ “The Odyssey” sentence: “Far
out, as far off shore as shouted
words would carry, I sent a few
back to the adversary.”
♦ Example sentence: We were
pretty far ahead, when all of the
sudden I see our adversary
catching up behind us.
