GCSE GEOGRAPHY
Which Syllabus?
AQA Syllabus A
Geography
How is the course examined?
• There are 2 exams –
each exam is worth
37.5% of the final
grade.
• There is a single piece of
Controlled Assessment
– worth 25% of the final
grade.
Tiered Entry
• Geography allows
students to be entered
at one of 2 levels
depending on how well
you are performing.
• Higher which allows A*
- E grades.
• Foundation which
allows C – G grades
• That decision would be
made in Year 11 based
on Mocks and
Controlled Assessment
performance!!!
What do we study?
There are basically two
areas of study – each of
which has a separate
1 hour 30 minute exam
at the end of Year 11.
In each exam you have
to attempt 3
questions!!!
• PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
• HUMAN GEOGRAPHY
The Physical Geography topics?
• You will study around 4
of the following topics
from 2 sections
SECTION A:
• The Restless Earth
• Rocks, Resources and
Scenery,
• Challenge of Weather and
Climate,
• Living World
You need to choose at
least one of these
topics from Section A
on the day of the exam
What about Section B?
• Section B consists of...
• Water on the Land
• Ice on the Land
• The Coastal Zone
• Again you need to
choose at least one of
these topics from
Section B....
• The 3rd question can
come from either
Section A or B – that’s
up to you
The Human Geography topics?
• You will study around 4
of the following topics
from 2 sections
SECTION A:
• Population Change
• Changing Urban
Environments
• Changing Rural
Environments
• You need to choose at
least one of these
topics from Section A
on the day of the exam

simple hypothesis
(theory) which they
then collect information
to test.
• 2000 words+
photographs, maps,
graphs etc.
• Will be completed
before your main
exams.
