• 1984: WSU initiated a synchronous terrestrial microwave system based on a television studio production model, the Washington Higher Education Telecommunication System (WHETS). • 1990s: K-20 System—bandwidth for video, voice and data tying together all state education entities. K-20 allowed WSU courses to be delivered to community colleges and to expand parts of the teacher education program directly to school districts.

• 1992: the institution launched a distance degree program, using videotapes produced in the university’s public television studios. It was one of the nation’s first fully asynchronous degree completion programs offered by a traditional institution • 1998: courses were moved online.
