Visit Culture
• Alvechurch is a middle school with a strong tradition
of well-run visits
• Very experienced staff at all levels
•
- Head EVC since 2003 (twice revalidated)
•
- All staff Worcestershire CC Visit Leader trained
•
- Dead Leader had also done EVC training and
Alpine Ski Leader
• Healthy and open training culture
•
- Had been an inspection visit
•
- All visits have a recorded evaluation
Storyline …
• Feb half-term ski visit to Aosta (Interski)
• Group of 78+10 staff – transported in 2 coaches
• Began return journey c1930, after evening meal on
Saturday 18th Feb
• Leader and Deputy on different coaches
• Planning expectation that coaches would travel in
convoy but this did not happen
• Leader died when coach 2 overturned around 0300
Sunday 19th. Other serious injuries
• Emergency contact details were scattered in
wreckage – duplicates were on coach 1
• Coach 1 unaware of coach 2 problems
Issues Arising …
• Operating procedures for long distance
coach driving – subject to French criminal
prosecution
• Availability of emergency contact
information resulting in delays in activating

• Detailed review of the guidance provided in
EVC and Visit Leader Training courses
relating to emergency situations
• Detailed review of guidance regarding the
choice and role of designated School

All visits are required to have:
• School Emergency Contact (SEC) – 24 / 7 if visit is
residential
• Field File X 2
- Group Leader
- SEC
• Itinerary. LA + LEC know location of group as far as is
possible.
• Emergency Cards
- Group Leader
- SEC
• CBC Duty Emergency Planning Officer (DEPO)
Recommendations
• At least two copies of the Field File to be held on
each coach.
• All adults to carry phone numbers of the Group
Leader, Supervisors and School Emergency
Contact.
• Recommendations to be posted on EVOLVE
• EVC and Group Leader training to include
specific training with regard to dealing with
emergencies
• SEC to be trained / briefed in the role
