Highlights

• Mobility portal – To facilitate mobility, a dynamic DB listing
opportunities and placements using a google map as
the interface

Case Study 3: Aqua-RET 2
Aqua-RET is a project focussing on Marine Renewable Energy Technologies
Aqua-RET 1 (2006-8) set out to show the user, in straightforward steps,
how these technologies work (Run of River, Tidal Impoundment, Tidal
Stream, Wave and Offshore Wind)
Aqua-RET 1 Deliverables:

Romanian and Portuguese

Aims and Objectives of Aqua-RET 2:
1)
to identify the labour market needs of the marine renewable sector and
ancillary businesses
2) to select, adapt and further develop existing material from Aqua-RET 1
3) to design and pilot new training programmes
4) to facilitate the transfer of skills from ancillary sectors to the marine
renewables sector

Justification
• The European Union (EU) 6th Framework Programme (20002006) funded 458 marine research projects worth more
than €848 million in grant-aid
• 124 marine research projects (grant-aid €297 million)
funded under the FP7 (2007 – 2013) to date.
• Although research effort is significant, not all of the new
knowledge has had the expected impact, perhaps because
of the “well-known obstacles impeding knowledge transfer
between research institutions and third parties”*

MarineTT Approach
• A change of focus from the promotion of research
projects per se to singling out research outputs those
end-users can adopt and/or exploit.
• The clustering and impartial assessment of knowledge
potential
• The incorporation of sustainability factors in judging the
benefit of knowledge exploitation to society (to ensure
that economic growth does not result in environmental
degradation)
• Analysis of the potential impact of transferring
knowledge
• Measuring the impact of any knowledge transferred;

Case Study 3: VALLA
VALLA will develop and pilot methods of recognising and accrediting
lifelong learning in the aquaculture sector via the European
Qualifications Framework (EQF) www.vallaproject.com

European aquaculture is a fast-growing innovative industry, its success relying on a
joint practical and theoretical knowledge base
•
Knowledge acquired through training (work placements, on-the-job training, and
short-term learning courses etc.) falls outside current credit systems
•
EQF links national qualifications systems, acting as a translation device to make
qualifications more readable (8 levels defined through learning outcomes –
knowledge, skills and competence)
