Motivation for Process Integration 1
To satisfy the increasing demand for development of
environmentally benign yet operable process
That means to:
• Select an environmentally friendly chemistry
• Minimize material waste
• Maximize energy (exergy) efficiency
• Ensure that the integrated plant is safely operable

Motivation for Process Integration 2
New Process:
• Consider aspects of environmental impact (material and energy
recycle) and control as early during process design as possible
• Prevent potential problems rather than cure (which may not be
possible)
Existing Process:
• Consider aspects of environmental impact (material and
energy recycle) and control on existing design – i.e. Retrofit

Motivation for Process Integration 4
To perform process integration tools are needed to
facilitate information flow
• Early during the design phase
• Throughout the process life cycle
Ideally an integrated tool is needed: ICAS
(Integrated Computer Aided System)
