Development of GIS database and interface
for the IM network
IM = Integrated Monitoring Programme ,
a permanent International Cooperative Programme on United Nations
ECE
The main aim of the programme is to provide a
framework to observe and understand complex
ecosystem effects in the external environment
59 intensively monitored reference sites in 23 countries
Development of Assessment and Monitoring
Techniques at Integrated Monitoring Sites in
Europe-project
Based on reference sites of IM Programme
One aim of the project was improve availability
and use of GIS data
The GIS database
The aim was to create a GIS database covering
all the IM sites
The most important map layers:
-
boundaries of the site
permanent plots, monitoring stations
catchment borders
vegetation
soil
digital elevation model
Additional map layers / images:
- development classes of trees
- base map
- air photo
etc.
Presently the database consists of 326 layers
Main tasks:
-
collecting data and paper maps from National Focal Points
digitizing paper maps
designing directory structure
data format conversion
coordinate transformation
naming map layers and attribute columns
making themes of each site compatible
- software for the database: ARC/INFO
The interface for the GIS database
- software for the interface: ArcView
Additional functions for make the following functions possible/easier:
-
get the GIS data visible on the computer screen
monitor the attribute data of map features
make analysis
print maps
get data for modelling activities
- Avenue
- ArcView extension
