Plural Nouns
Plural means more than 1! There
are several rules for making nouns
plural.
Rule #1
For most nouns,
simply add an “s” to
make the noun plural.
Examples:
birds, desks, girls,
oceans, pencils, teachers
Rule #2
For nouns ending in ch, sh,
ss, s, or x, add an –es to
make the noun plural.
Examples: churches, foxes, bushes,
buses, glasses, boxes
Rule #3
Nouns that end with a
consonant and y,
change the y to i and
add –es.
Examples: city-cities, berryberries, canary-canaries,
Rule #4
For nouns ending in a
vowel and y, just add
an s.
Examples: boy-boys, monkeymonkeys, donkey-donkeys
Rule #5
For some nouns, the word
changes to a completely
new word when forming the
plural.
Example: tooth-teeth, child-children,
goose-geese, cactus-cacti, foot-feet
Rule #6
For some nouns, the
singular and plural form
are the exact same!
Example: moose-moose, deer-deer,
series-series
