Project-3 : Scientific Activities
1. Prof. Dr. Othman Ross - Biodiversity studies



Monthly sampling of plankton at a fixed station around Port
Dickson. The samples have been taken continuously for the
past 3 years to monitor trends and seasonal changes as well
as the impact of the environment on the plankton
communities. In addition, the biology of the dominant
copepod Acartia is also being studied.
The pelagic ecosystem around coral reefs of Pulau Tioman
have also been focused. The pelagic community structure
and its dynamics is studied to shed some light on their
relationship with the coral communities.
Research on biodiversity of amphipods in and around
Peninsular Malaysia waters is also being carried out.

4. Prof. Dr. Fatimah Md. Yusoff - Study on Tropical
Marine Copepod Biodiversity in Selected Coastal
Zone Ecosystems in the Straits of Melaka.


Monthly field sampling for Physico-Chemical Parameters
(Water temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, etc).
Processing and analyzing of field samples.
Four different ecosystems were selected along the coastal
zone; seagrass area, coastal waters off mangrove forest,
coastal waters of shrimp aquaculture farm and fish cage
mariculture area in the Straits of Melaka. Sample
collections were undertaken six times throughout the year
which correspond to two times sample collection during
two monsoons (Southwest and Northeast) and two
inter/transitional monsoon (before each monsoon) seasons
in Malaysia.



Water quality parameters such as temperature, salinity,
dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, TDS, and turbidity were
measured in situ using multiple water quality meter
(Hydrolab Surveyor 4). Samples for nutrient analysis (TN, TP,
TAN, Nitrite, SRP, carbon) and chlorophyll a were also
collected. Analysis was done in the laboratory following
standard methods for seawater analysis.
Copepod sample collections were also carried out using
conical shaped (with mouth opening size of 45.0 cm and 1.0
m length) plankton net with 100µ mesh with acrylic plastic
cod end. Analysis was carried out in the laboratory.

Perak and Penang, Malaysia to determine the effect
of heavy metal pollution on the copepod biodiversity
and copepod mutagenesis.
Biology Colloquium

Three poster presentations during the 3rd Biology
Colloquium which was held on the 12th of December 2007:
a) The influence of different monsoon seasons on the
composition and abundance of tropical copepods in seagrass
ecosystem (bronze award), b) Mutagenesis in zooplankton:
