LUKE JURAN
DEPT. OF GEOGRAPHY
BACKGROUND
• Dissertation chapter (part of larger study)
• Created/collected all data
• Modified ‘Water Poverty Index’ (Sullivan et al. 2003,
Sullivan et al. 2006)
• Composite index (HDI, GDI, GGI) with 5 variables
• Applied to post-tsunami housing in India
• 10 variables
BACKGROUND
• 2004 tsunami struck South India
• Two adjacent, socio-physically similar states
impacted
• New housing settlements constructed for affectees
• Two supra-sites: Karaikal District, Puducherry and
Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu (neighboring
‘counties’)

24 miles

Water quality (9 parameters)
Post-point treatment
Distance
Density

LPCPD
Hours of availability (2 sub-variables)
Capacity (7 sub-variables)
Access to ‘unimproved’ sources (3 sub-variables)
OBJECTIVES
Calculate WPI at variable, site, and district scales
Weighting: household, site, or district rankings?
Visual representation (decagram)
Comparative, descriptive analysis at site and district
scales
• Argue that WPI instrument can be used to:
•
•
•
•
• Compare project outcomes
• Measure pre and post changes
• Assess project ‘success’ given standards, objectives, or
expectations
