Many main stream companies need to comply with legislation and
regulations- market worth £3.5 billion p.a. by 2010
•
Businesses under pressure to green & improve ethical elements of
supply chain
•
Eg packaging/ bags - uncertainty about which materials to supportreusable plastics, biodegradable, or natural fibres (jute, cotton etc)
•
No definitive answers to the dilemmas- opportunities for research and
consultancy

Business wants to work with academia
– highly experienced, impartial expertise
– interest and energy around the topic
– new sources of funds and potential for industrial collaborationsupports work which would otherwise go un-funded

Work needs to be of high quality, likely to be supporting investment
decisions which jobs depend, fast turn-around, protect IP
– from an initial proof of concept project and progress through to a high value
project supported by Government funds
