YEAR 6 SATs MEETING

Aims of the meeting:

• • to inform you about Year 6 SATs to encourage you to support your child and make a significant difference to their learning

What are SATs?

• • • • Statutory Assessment tests which all pupils take at the end of Key Stage two.

They provide a snapshot of attainment in English and Maths.

The tests will take place week beginning Monday 9 th May 2011.

It is hoped that the children will achieve a Level 4 in the tests.

What are the results used for?

• • • Monitoring school success Guiding secondary schools Guiding the school on how to improve our service – analysed each year

The English Tests

There are 2 parts: 1.

Reading 2.

Writing

• Reading Test -15 minutes reading time -45 minutes to answer questions -Test can include a wide range of texts (see example) -Total of 50 marks

Writing Test (Total = 50 marks) • Shorter Task (12 marks) 20 minutes • Longer Task (28 marks) 45 minutes • Spelling Test (7 marks) • Handwriting (3 marks)

The Mathematic Tests

• • • There are three tests - test A (non calculator) - test B (calculator) - mental arithmetic Test A and B have 40 marks each Mental arithmetic has 20 marks

Assessment

• Teacher assessment results are reported alongside the test results. Both have equal status and provide complementary information about a pupils attainment.

Preparing for the tests at home.

• Research has shown that children who achieve Level 4 at the end of Key Stage two will gain the expected five GCSEs with grades A-C at the end of Key Stage three.

Ways to Help at Home

• Read with your child at every opportunity • Help your child learn their multiplication tables • Encourage them to use educational games on the computer (see websites) • • Talk about their learning Go through some practice papers together (but not in test week!)

• Encourage them to do their best!

During the test week please make sure your child: -gets enough sleep -eats breakfast -comes to school with a mid morning snack and water bottle -Is encouraged. You cannot FAIL the SATs!
