A Few Facts about the Expository
Reading and Writing Curriculum:
ERWC
• More than 3000 teachers have been introduced to the
ERWC; the course has been adopted by more than 200 high
schools across the state
• Thousands of teachers use this curriculum—even if the full
course has not been adopted
• ERWC was developed due to the findings of the EAP by a
statewide task force including teachers, CSU faculty, and
administrators.
• The ERWC course is approved by the CSU and UC systems
as a “b” (ELA) course.
• A bottom-up, grass roots process has been responsible for
the success of the ERWC
Seven Principles of the ERWC

14 Standards-aligned modules that:
◦ Focus on working with informational texts; and
◦ Focus on rhetorical reading and writing, vocabulary,
and academic language development.

All modules include vocabulary development
activities and sample student essays.

We engage students with high-interest
texts, and, by doing so, motivate them to
be involved in their learning.
We enhance long-term learning beyond the
