COMPASS
• Common Operational Modeling, Planning and
Simulation Strategy: non-intrusive, middleware
set of interface standards.
• Enables real-time Distributed Collaborative Planning
and execution coordination between disparate existing
or developing C4I or mission planning systems.
• Provides an interface to distribute M&S products to the
warfighter for enhanced collaborative plan building
insight and decision support.
• DMSO - original sponsor for R&D phase under C4I to
Simulation Initiative Project (until Dec 97)
• Operational fielding Jan / Feb 99 in GCCS under JCS,
DISA and DD JPO sponsorship (since Jan 98)

Simulations
• Flexible, wide-area networking of heterogeneous planning systems
• Access simulations to evaluate key decisions or entire plan; explore “what-ifs”
• Use the same “virtual battlefield” to plan, simulate, replan, or train

COMPASS C4I-to-Sim Program
Summary
• Warfighter Requirements for Distributed
Collaborative Planning (DCP) are still emerging.
COMPASS is the first comprehensive step for DCP in the
DII COE, supporting the Warfighter in all planning-toexecution processes.
• Demonstrated Mature, COE Compliant, Proven
Technology... no other comprehensive collaborative
interface application crosses operating systems or
platforms from SGI to SUN to NT.
• COMPASS services provide real-time DCP
operational support for today’s Warfighter.
Fully supports centralized control and decentralized
execution of military operations.
Operation EA Dragon as collaboratively
planned by CJTF (MCS/P), ARFOR (MCS/P),
JFACC (AFMSS for CAS), MARFOR (AC2ES),
JSOTF (AC2ES and SOFPARS) and
monitored by the MOSC (TAMPS)
