The N.T. Pattern of the
Salvation Experience
West End Church of Christ
By
Orpheus J. Heyward
First Things First
What do you believe it takes to be saved?
Sinner’s Prayer?
Perhaps just Faith alone?
Maybe it is all grace, and nothing
else necessary?
Salvation Is According to A
Pattern
By Pattern….
•We mean a model
•We mean a standard
•We mean a mold
Teaching
The Plan of this Study
• We will look at the pattern for salvation
holistically so as to see the complete picture of
salvation.
• The reality is that no one verse teaches
everything about salvation.
• Therefore we must look at several passages so as
to obtain all the details regarding being saved.
The Pattern
According to Jesus
Examining Great
Commission
John 12:48
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words,
hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have
spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
Mark 16:15-16 And The Pattern
Mark 16:15–16
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and
preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but
he that believeth not shall be damned.

Matthew 28:19 and The Pattern
Matthew 28:19–20
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded
you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

ASV
Matthew 28:19–20
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all
nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever I have
commanded you: and, lo, I am
with you alway, even unto the
end of the world. Amen.
Matthew 28:19–20
19 Go ye therefore, and make
disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them into the name of
the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit:
20 teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever I commanded
you: and lo, I am with you always,
even unto the end of the world.
The Meaning of “Into The
Name”
• This phrase was used in greek commercial
activity, in which whenever an object was
purchased, by someone, the object was said to be
into the person’s name indicating ownership.
• When a person gets baptized, they are being
baptized into the possession of the Father, the
Son, and the Holy Spirit, in which we become
God’s property.
According to Matthew 28:19-20
Text
• Go make disciples of all
Nations
• Baptizing them
• “into the name of the
Father, the Son, and the
Holy Spirit”.
Application
• Man must become a
disciple of the Lord
• Man becomes a disciple
by submitting to baptism
• Baptism makes one the
possession of the
Godhead.
Luke 24:47 and the Comission
Repentance
•To change one’s mind
•It is a mental change
leading to a changed life
Luke 24:46–47
46 And said unto them, Thus it is
written, and thus it
behoved(was necessary
for)Christ to suffer, and to rise
from the dead the third day:
47 And that repentance and
remission of sins should be
preached in his name among
all nations, beginning at
Jerusalem.
What Do We Know Thus Far?
•
•
•
•
Man must Hear the Gospel (Mark 16:15)
Man must Believe the Gospel (Mark 16:16)
Man must Repent (Luke 24:47)
Man must be Baptized (Matthew 28:19,
Mark 16:16)
According to Jesus, this
constitutes the pattern of
salvation. Do you believe
Jesus?
The Pattern
According to The
Apostles
John 17:20-21
20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also
which shall believe on me through their word;
The 1st Case of Conversion
Acts 2:37–38
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart,
and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and
brethren, what shall we do?
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every
one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
According to this Passage.....
1)The heard the gospel message
2)They believed (implied by “pricked”)
3)They Repented – Changed their mind
4)They were baptized
All of this was done to receive remission of sins

The Response in the
Conversion
Acts 2:41
41 Then they that gladly received his
word were baptized: and the same day
there were added unto them about
three thousand souls.
Acts 2:47
47 Praising God, and having favour
with all the people. And the Lord added
to the church daily such as should be
saved.
Case of
• Upon hearing the
instructions for salvation,
they were baptized.
• God added those who
were being saved to the
church
Added to the Church
Added to the Church
Acts 2.41,47
Obedience
to the
Gospel
(Acts 2:3738)
• The Church was built by
Jesus (Matthew 16:18)
• It is the Body of the
saved (Eph. 1:22.23,Eph.
4:4, Eph. 5:22-23)
• It was not a
denomination, and predates denominations.
One More Thing! The
Confession
Acts 8:35–38
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same
scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain
water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth
hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart,
thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that
Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they
went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch;
and he baptized him.
Confession Before Baptism
• Confessing Christ is an acknowledgement
of his Lordship (Romans 10:9-10)
• By confession, I verbally manifest my faith
and loyalty in Christ.
• Upon his confession, the Eunuch was
baptized for the remission of sins (Acts
2:38)
Why Are You Waiting
Acts 22:16
And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be
baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on
the name of the Lord.
Are You Ready to be Baptized?
