CORPORATE SOURCES
Many corporations have community giving
programs
 Identify large corporations in your community;
look at their websites for their priorities
 Local examples: Wal-Mart; Home Depot
 Many banks, railroads, manufacturers have
giving programs that focus on areas in which
they have offices/facilities

GRANT RESEARCH
Review grant requirements carefully!
 Make a broad search first then narrow to grants
that fit your specific needs
 Make sure funder gives in your area, your agency
is an eligible type to receive funds, and they give
in your area of interest
 For federal grants, you can look at a synopsis of
the grant to determine if it would be a good fit,
but until you read the RFP, you won’t know for
sure.
 For each program needing funds, create a chart
of possible grant sources; include max funding
amounts and application deadlines

BUDGETS
Budgeting – the process of determining the total
cost of the project and translating it in specific
categories throughout the various phases of the
project
 The format of your budget will be established by
the RFP.
 Some funders provide a specific form or dictate a
format
 The funder will use the budget to judge the
practicality of the program. If the funder does
not believe the budget is viable, the grant
application is in jeopardy of not being funded

BUDGETS

The budget must be based on sound estimates. If
adequate funds are not requested, the program
must still be carried out. Funders typically do
not award “extra” funding.
BUDGETS

Budget Considerations –





What costs are eligible to be paid with grant funds?
Are indirect costs allowable?
Does the funder set a limit on the percentage of the
project it will pay for? (ex: FHLB will only pay 75% of
a project’s total development cost)
Are matching funds required? If a match is required,
must it be cash or in kind?
Is leveraging required? If not required, will
leveraging gain extra points for the project?
BUDGETS
Use worksheets to identify costs of the project
 Don’t cut the project short by failing to identify
costs. Example: If the grant requires travel to an
out of state conference, don’t leave the travel
costs out, including per diems for the employee(s)
 Justify your expenses in the budget narrative.
Give sound explanations of your methodology in
arriving at the budgeted cost. (Don’t just pull
costs out of your hat)

BUDGETS
Salaries – budget for actual cost of the salary
including taxes and fringe benefits.
 Prorate employee time – If an employee will
spend 50% of their time on a project, budget for
.50 FTE at that position (be sure to make
adequate estimates of employee time)
 Supplies – Determine the cost of the supplies
needed to carry out the program.
 Telephone – This is a way to recoup some
operating expenses. Assign a portion of
telephone expenses to the project.

BUDGETS
Travel Expenses – Allow for travel, lodging,
ground transportation and meals. To justify, look
up airfares and hotel rates.
 Transportation – Does the program involve
transporting participants? Perhaps a vehicle
purchase should be purchased (but budget for a
driver and gas); Perhaps bus fare should be
budgeted; or maybe mileage for a case manager is
required.
 Be sure to read the RFP and prepare the budget
in the prescribed format.
