Selection Team Decisions

team-member?

candidate?
 How will you decide who to select?
Consensus Defined
4
Consensus is a group decision making process which attempts
to ensure that everyone involved is an equal participant, all
opinions are considered and the final decision comes about
through extensive discussion and the constructive resolution
of critique and dissent. Consensus is not unanimity, nor is it
compromise. It is a decision that everyone in the group
accepts, (even though people may have concerns, reservations
or prefer other options to that which is decided), and should
be what the group considers the best possible decision in a
given context.
Consensus requires…
5
Time
Honest, active participation by all
Good listening and communication
skills by all
Open-mindedness
Creative thinking

Key Guidelines to Reach Consensus
7
 Listen for understanding. Be able to paraphrase
someone else’s point of view
 Describe interest and your reasoning not your
desired outcome
 Avoid changing your mind only to reach agreement
and avoid conflict
 View differences of opinion as helpful rather than
harmful.
The “call for consensus”
8
 Support if:
 you believe that this decision is consistent with the mission of the
team and is the best decision possible at this moment
 you are committed to following through with it
 Stand Aside if:
 you do not have enough info but trust that others do
 you will be unable to follow through for personal reasons
 you are unable to make up your mind about the decision
 you disagree but can live with the decision
 Block if:
 you believe that this decision is NOT consistent with the mission
of the team
 you could not in good conscience live with the group making this
decision
